It functions in concert with other committees to close the gap between science and practice and to use a multidisciplinary approach to reducing asthma morbidity in an underserved, urban community. Its overall objectives are not only to endorse and promote use of evidence-based interventions that are grounded in scientifically sound and current treatment modalities, asthma management guidelines, and professional/patient partnerships, but also to adapt those interventions for practice in the community. In addition, the committee seeks to improve practitioners’ asthma management knowledge and skills and to enhance provider-patient/family communication concerning the seriousness of asthma and management of the disease. In addition, the committee's A+ Life (Asthma Learning is for Everyone) Workgroup conducted its first A+ LIFE program on Saturday, August 13, 2005 at The HSC Pediatric Center. Thirteen children and adults from four families participated in this family centered program jointly created and hosted by DC’s four Medicaid managed care organizations, the National Capital Area Society for Public Health Education, and the National Children’s Museum. The workgroup plans to expand this program to additional community sites.
