It recognizes children’s generally greater susceptibility to environmental irritants, including those agents known to trigger asthma symptoms (e.g., tobacco smoke, dust mites) or even to contribute to the onset of asthma. The committee designs strategies tailored for an inner-city population and environment, including tools to conduct environmental assessments and reduce asthma triggers in homes and other settings. It also focuses on building bridges with government authorities; schools; housing, community, and advocacy organizations; tenants, landlords, and homeowners; financial institutions; and environmental experts to institute interventions and policies that result in asthma-friendly environments.
